Protocols: Routable,
Non-Routable, and Routing
- Routing consists of two distinct activities, route determination
and information transport.
- Routing protocols are used to determine an optimal path or
route. Paths are then stored in a routing table.
- Routable protocols are forwarded by a router according to the
router's routing table entries.
- Non-routable protocols can be bridged or can be encapsulated
within a routable protocol.
- Interior Gateway routing protocols are used to within an
autonomous (centrally-administered) system.
- Exterior Gateway protocols are used between autonomous systems
